The Espana boasts a fantastic location just off the Ramblas, so provides a great base for who want to be in the hive of activity. Although the hotel is a simple two star, the building itself has some stunning historic features. The rooms and facilities are very basic but clean, and best suited to budget travellers looking for functional accommodation with location. The hotel will infact close in August '08 for rennovation, however people should be aware that some work has started, though is not too invasive.

Fantastic location just off La Ramblas.
Staff helpful and friendly.
Rooms are modestly furnished but cleaned every day.
Restaurant is handy if one does not want to eat out.
Simple and low budget so exellent choice for a weekend.

The hotel Espana is located just a few minutes walk from the Ramblas, Plaza Catalunya and the Gothic Quarter. The nearest metro station to the hotel is Liceo.

Very convenient ... Location was excellent... near the Rambla area... Great location... ideally suited to a prefect holiday in Barcelona... About a minute walk from the La Ramblas there are many restaurants and bars... Central hotel literally just off the Ramblas... Reception were unable to give us a second ... very friendly staff on reception ... We arrived at the hotel to be greeted by an unfriendly man... helpful staff who spoke good English... god service and friendley staff ... staff were also extremely friendly.... Maids arrived to clean room first morning just as we were getting ready to go out , asked them to come back in 10 minutes yet when we returned that evening the maids had'nt come back... Friendly staff... very helpful at reception,... Staff were also fluent English speakers and extremely helpful.... Reception staff were very helpful and coped with the many school groups. ... Rooms rather small... Disappointed with rooms 216 and 217 ... I booked five rooms for a group of nine people... my wife & I were given a room that had just been refurbished ... Two of the other rooms given to our group were small and in need of refurbishment ... noise from passing traffic and other guests returning late disturbed one of our group ... the rooms could do with new furniture... Rooms basic but very clean not much natural light... noisy.... air-con had issues... Rooms are spacious and very clean... room wasn't so great very basic although nice and clean.... Ask for a renovated room... The room was basic but clean and the bathroom was new... IF you are a heavy sleeper then you will have no problems with this hotel ... if you are a light sleeper like me or are traveling with children this may not be ideal. ...

General Hotel Information

The Espana hotel was designed by a leading architect from the modernista movement. The hotel boasts an interior with historical art nouveau murals, elaborate woodwork, ceramic tiles and mosaics all with listed protection. The rooms offer simple, basic and functional comforts. All rooms have telephone, air conditioning and central heating. Twin rooms or rooms with a double bed all have full bathroom en suite. The Espana hotel was built in 1865, and has a total of 80 rooms spread over 5 floors. The hotel's facilities include a foyer with 24-hour reception, safe, lift and an à la carte restaurant. The hotel has a stagering total of 3 restaurants for you to enjoy anything from a cosy dinner to a banquet for up to 200 people in the reception room decorated by the modernist artist Ramón Casas, illuminated with natural light through the glass ceiling. Enjoy the exquisite international cuisine, with fresh produce from the nearby La Boquería market and a selection of wines to fulfil all your expectations.

Cheap stay - old hotel with alot of flaws... dont expect your modern day hotel. Bit old... lovely interiors ... I booked the Espana Hotel for seven people... We were all thrilled with the hotel ... The hotel was fantastic... it was ideal. ... Breakfast was not very inspiring ... Only complaint was that hotel was full of students who were very noisey... the hotel is quaint and lovely.... the hotel was to a good standard of a 2 star... Breakfast was ok... this hotel is a dump and a rip off ... it was filthy, smelly and we didnt even stay the night we paid to stay somewhere else... Ideal for young people looking for a base rather than long stay hotel... IF you are a heavy sleeper then you will have no problems with this hotel ...

Disappointed with rooms 216 and 217 - outlook dismal. Also disappointed that tea/coffee/bar drinks not available in hotel during day or evening.

Top Tip

Bus tour excellent. Tablao Flamenco Cordobes restaurant and Flamenco show on La Rambla - expensive but excellent.

I booked five rooms for a group of nine people. Location was excellent. We were celebrating my 60th birthday and my wife & I were given a room that had just been refurbished - the only one I believe as a trial. It was excellent but consumables were not replaced over the four night stay (i.e. toilet rolls, tissues, shower gel etc). Reception were unable to give us a second key which would have been very useful when my wife was ill in bed on the third day. The only English speaking TV chanel was CNN which was a bit disappointing. Two of the other rooms given to our group were small and in need of refurbishment although the hotel website boasts that the rooms have been recently refurbished (maybe the comment is ten years old!). Taps in one of the rooms were in danger of dropping off and noise from passing traffic and other guests returning late disturbed one of our group on three nights between 3am & 5am.

Top Tip

Lots of great places to visit in easy walking distance. Breakfast in the hotel is basic and the rooms should be good after the full refurbishment.

I booked the Espana Hotel for seven people. We were all thrilled with the hotel and thought about booking it again next year in June, but unfortunately it will be closed from April for renovations. It was near the Rambla area. The hotel was fantastic, the rooms could do with new furniture, otherwise it was ideal.

Top Tip

It is good to do the open bus tour for 22 euro a day and tour the city. You can get on and off as many times as you like. We did all the Gaudi places. Barcelona is amazing.

Rooms basic but very clean not much natural light.Breakfast was not very inspiring .Great location ,very friendly staff on reception public rooms shabby but chic .Do take warnings about pickpockets very seriously .

Top Tip

Attic restaurant on las ramblas very good and not too expensive , very busy so book table if you can .
