Family rooms are an impressive size. Nice hotel. Good location near royal mile in one direction and princes st for shopping the other. Very near lots of restaurants, try any on royal mile for an oldy worldy feel.

On arrival, the room had no heating. Someone came to get the heat working but it was uncontrollable. Very hot all the time.
On arrival we were given a visitor card which we said we could book things to our room. After our evening meal in the restaurant we presented the card only to be told that it was not acceptable and did we have alternative means of payment. The restauant had no ice buckets for white wine. They kept the wine in a fridge behind the bar so we had to keep asking staff for top ups.
The breakfast on the first morning had no management of the hot food counter and kept running out of hot food items with big queues and long waits. The second morning we had our cereal, left our tea/coffee on the table while we went for hot food and came back to find our table had been cleared and re set for another sitting.
On the sunday afternoon, we came back to the hotel at 4pm to find that the room had not been cleaned. We went down to reception and complained and they said someone would be up. We went out again and came back at 6:30 and the room still hadn't been cleaned. Eventually someone came to clean the room as we were getting ready to go out so we told him just to do the tea/coffee tray and he said he could give us milk and sugar but he had run out of tea. So we had to go down to the restaurant and ask for some tea bags from the kitchen (something the cleaner said he couldn't do). Overall not impressed. To many little things that ruin a stay which is only for 3 nights.

There are plenty of local restaurants within minutes walk of Edinburgh centre and St Andrews week is always good with the German and Scottish winter markets.

The only thing is that if you don't mind your room being cleaned until 4.30pm and after each day or if you sit in the bar make yourself known so that they will come and serve you and always make sure that if you talk to reception that they make a note of your needs on computer or it won't get done.

The haggis in the restaurant is to die for. The Mitre bar just around the corner from the hotel does a good beer and a sandwich.

I booked this hotel as a surprise birthday present for myself and fiance, so I wanted this to be really special, paid the extra to upgrade the room, and it was definately worth it, what a fantastic hotel and the room was lush!!!

There were 2 issues that I was disappointed with the hotel. 1st the hair dryer in the room was broken and although I brought it to the attention of staff on 3 occasions I did not receive a replacement. 2nd scrambled eggs were on the breakfast menu but it took 20 on the first morning and 25 on the 2nd morning to have any cooked so I abandoned it on mornings 3 and 4.

Would recommend an Indian Restaurant called Khushis on Victoria St - just off the Royal Mile. Food was lovely and terrific value for money (also a BYO premises!)

The Witchery restaurant near the Castle was gorgeous. The Dome bar [off George St] was amazing!
